House Fire and a MVA

2/05 @1349 Engine 2 and Tanker 2 dispatched to assist Company 8 (New Bloomfield) with a reported house fire. Chief 8 (Waltz) arrived with smoke showing, and Engine 8 pulling a line. Tanker 2 (FF B. Leonhard) arrived and staged. Engine 2 (Dep. Chief Worner) arrived and sent manpower to the scene where they stood by. Engine 8 made a quick knock of the fire, and the Engine and Tanker were released shortly after.

RIT Training

2/1: With the alarm bells being silent for nearly a week crews were able to review RIT operations for weekly training. After a review of breaching, RIT bag skills and patient removal skills members performed two scenarios. Crews were put into operation to rescue a downed fire fighter who was trapped in a basement following a collapse. In both scenarios the crews were able to complete the operation in under 20 minutes.

 

Passing of Life Member

The Duncannon Fire Company regrets to announce the passing of Life Member Dan Rhoads. The members of the Duncannon Fire Company wish to express our sympathy to his family.

Services will be held on Saturday at Cornerstone Church, 595 New Bloomfield Road, Duncannon PA 17020. The viewing will be held at 1200, with the service following at 1400. There will be no grave side service, or procession.

Old Trail Road Shed Fire

1/24 @1430 Squad and Tanker 2 dispatched to assist Company 9 (New Buffalo) on a unattached structure fire. Squad 2 (Dep. Chief Worner) and Tanker 2 (Chief Worner) responded within a minute and arrived with Squad crews assisting with overhauling a shed, and Tanker supplying Engine 9.

Linton Hill Rd. Working Fire

1/21 @2030 Company 2 dispatched with mutual aid companies to 277 Linton Hill Road for a reported structure fire. Chief 2-2 (Conrad), Tanker 2 (Capt. Weaver), and Squad 2 (Lt. Mechling) responded and were advised of a working mobile fire. Tanker 2 arrived and stretched a 1 3/4" attack line and began an interior attack, with Squad crews arriving shortly after and assisting inside. Truck 2 (Lt. Bissonnette) arrived and began ventilation procedures. Crews made quick work of the mobile home fire, marking control shortly after arrival. The Squad remained on scene to assist the State Police Fire Marshal with the investigation due to suspected arson. Duncannon Fire Company was assisted on scene by New Buffalo (9), and Liverpool (5).

Gap View Road Building Fire

1/18 @0733 Squad 2 (FF Nevius), and Tanker 2 (Asst. Chief Conrad) dispatched to Aces Inn on Water Gap road in Middle Paxton township, Dauphin County. Squad 2 arrived, with its crew gaining entry and making an aggressive interior attack with members from Company 38 (Dauphin-Middle Paxton Fire), while the operator and Tanker 2 set up a supply site for Tanker shuttles. Tanker 2 shuttled 2 loads of water from the fill site on Erie St in the borough to the supply site.

Traffic 2 also responded on this event and controlled traffic around the incident.

Newport Road JOB

1/14 @0306, Company 2 dispatched for a reported house fire at 717 Newport Road. Upon going enroute, Chief 2-1 (Worner) was advised of multiple calls reporting a well involved house. Squad 2 (Asst. Chief Conrad) and Chief Worner arrived to find the first floor of a 1.5 story single family house fully involved. Squad crews went to work pulling a 200' 2 1/2" attack line and began suppression on side A, while Engine 2 (FF Wise) pulled a 250' 1 3/4" attack line to begin fire suppression on side C. Truck 2 (Lt. Bissonnette) arrived, and set up on side A, and began attacking the bulk of the fire with their master stream. Engine 8 (New Bloomfield) set up a fill site on Sulphur Springs road for tanker shuttles. After darkening down the bulk of the fire, crews went interior to begin opening up and extinguishing the remaining fire, while Truck crews vented the roof. One of the occupants was awoken by a family pet, whom then alerted the rest of the occupants.

Duncannon Fire Company was assisted by Co's. 8 (New Bloomfield) 9 (New Buffalo) 10 (Newport) DC 29 (Halifax) DC 37 (Susquehanna) DC 35 (Linglestown)

Daylight Crew Busy with 3 Calls

1/12 @1126 Squad 2 dispatched to a MVA in the 500blk of Newport Road. Squad 2 (Dep. Chief Worner) responded with 10, and arrived to find a single vehicle had struck a telephone pole. Crews assisted with patient care, controlling hazards, and traffic.

@1206 while returning from the MVA, Squad 2 (Dep. Chief Worner) was alerted to Route 147 in the area of 22/322 for a vehicle fire. Chief 2 (Worner) arrived with an working engine compartment fire. Squad 2 arrived, stretching the 100' bumper load to extinguish active fire in the engine compartment and dash. Engine 2 (FF Nevius) also responded and assisted crews on scene. Crews cleared the scene @1243.

While returning from the auto fire, @1250, Perry County Communications dispatched first due units to a cardiac arrest. Utility 2 (FF Nevius), Squad 2 (Dep. Chief Worner), and Chief 2 (Worner) all responded within seconds. Units arrived to a class 4 patient. Cleared @1259.

 

 

PIN JOB Rts. 22/322

1/08 @1907 Squad and Truck 2 dispatched to Rts. 22/322 in the area of the truck stop for a SUV vs. tractor trailer with entrapment. Squad 2 (Dep. Chief Worner) responded with 10, and were advised of 1 entrapped. Truck 2 (FF Egresitz) responded shortly after with 4. Squad crews arrived to find the same and went to work. Crews stabilized the vehicle, and controlled hazards while the toolmen began removing the drivers side door. Truck crew arrived and assisted Squad crews with extrication. Crews then assisted with removing the patient from the vehicle, and loading into Amb. 29. Extrication complete @1923. Truck 2 returned to service, while Squad crews cleared debris from the roadway.

1/06 @1645 Squad 2 dispatched to 18 Benvenue road (Rts 22/322) at the truck stop for a MVA. Squad 2 (Asst. Chief Conrad) responded within minutes, with Perry County Communications advising that Capt. 2 (Weaver) was on scene with 4 vehicles involved, 1 on the roadway, and 3 off the road with 1 into the building. Squad 2 arrived finding the same, with crews splitting, assisting with patient care, and controlling hazards.

Rts. 22/322 at the Sheetz

12/23 @1653 Squad 2 dispatched to Rts. 22/322 in front of the Sheetz for a 2 vehicle accident with injuries. Squad 2, and Chief 2-1 (Worner) arrived to find the same, with crews splitting, and providing patient care, removing hazards, and debris.

Burley Rd. Vehicle Fire

12/23 @1153 Squad 2 dispatched to Burley Road and Railroad Street for a reported vehicle fire. Squad 2, and Chief 2-1 (Worner) responded within a minute, and arrived to find tires, gas cans, and vehicle fuel tanks on fire against a vehicle beginning to involve the engine compartment. Squad crews stretched the 100' trash line to extinguish, and used 2 hooks to pull objects out of the fire area.

1616 State Rd. MVA

12/20 @0814 Company 2 alerted to 1616 State Road for a single vehicle accident. Squad 2 (Lieut. May) and Chief 2 (Worner) responded within a minute, and received an update for a single vehicle had traveled off the road way into parked vehicles at Norm's Tire and Auto. Squad and Chief 2 arrived to find the same. Squad crews assisted with removing hazards and debris.

12/16 @1822 Squad 2 alerted to Rts. 22/322 WB in the area of Sheetz for a 2 vehicle accident with numerous reported injuries. Squad 2 and Chief 2-2 (Conrad) arrived to find 1 vehicle had struck the side of a trailer at the Sheetz entrance. Crews split, assisting with patient care, controlling hazards, and removing debris.

New Bloomfield Rd. Roll Over

11/28 @0320 Company 2 dispatched to 1318 New Bloomfield road for a single vehicle accident reported vehicle vs. a tree. Ambulance 29 went in the area with a tree down on the roadway, and a vehicle on its roof with no occupant. Rescue 2 and Chief 2-1 (Worner) arrived to find the vehicle had traveled up a bank and struck a tree before hitting a parked vehicle and rolling onto its roof. Crews checked overturned vehicle to verify there were no occupants present, controlled hazards, removed downed tree, and debris.

11/20 @1133 Company 2 dispatched to Rts. 11/15 SB in the area of Rts. 22/322 for a vehicle fire. Chief 2-2 (Conrad) arrived prior to Rescue, and Tanker 2 finding a well off SUV and extension to brush. Rescue and Tanker crews stretched 2, 1 3/4" attack lines to extinguish fire. Units remained on scene for mop up and overhaul of the vehicle.

11/14 @1552 Rescue 2 dispatched to Rts. 22/322 in the area of Rt. 849 for a 3 vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer. Rescue 2 and Chief 2-2 (Conrad) arrived to find the same. Crews assisted EMS with patient care, and cleared debris. As crews contained hazards, Utility 2 was requested to the scene to assist with fluids on the roadway.

8 Pearl Dr. Shed Fire

11/9 @1406 Company 2 and mutual aid units were dispatched for a reported shed fire with extension into woodlands. Rescue 2, Chief 2-1 and  Chief 2 (Worner) arrived to find 1 10x12, and 1 8x10 shed fully involved. Rescue crew stretched a 1 3/4" attack line to extinguish. Rescue 2 was supplied by Tanker 9 (New Buffalo).

229 Market St. JOB

11/6 @0911 Company 2 dispatched along with mutual aid units to a reported residential structure fire in the area of Green and High streets. Chief 2-1 (Worner) went in the area with the second floor of a 2 story residential home converted to apartments well involved in the rear of 229 Market street. Rescue, Truck, and Chief 2-1 arrived with Rescue crews stretching 2, 1 3/4" attack lines and beginning an aggressive interior attack, and Truck 2 setting up on side A. Due to conditions deteriorating, Command pulled interior units out and allowed Truck 2 to flow its master stream to darken down the bulk of the fire. Interior crews then returned to their attack and began opening up while Truck crews from Truck 2 and 10 began overhauling the roof. At 1001, Command 2 marked control.

Barn Fire East Hanover Twp.

11/4 @0141 Tanker 2 was dispatched to East Hanover township in Dauphin County to assist with 2 barns fully involved. Both barns are estimated to have over 3,000 tons of hay within them. Tanker 2 arrived and shuttled water from a fill site to the scene while crews attacked the fire with numerous step guns, and master streams from Truck 35 (Linglestown). Tanker crew continued this process until going available at 0634.

At 1600, Engine 2 was requested to the scene to assist watching over the fire, and make sure there was no spread to an adjacent barn, and field. Engine crew remained on scene until 2200.

2 Sulphur Springs Rd. Chimney Fire

11/1 @1838 Company 2 dispatched to 2 Sulphur Springs road for a reported chimney fire. Rescue 2, Truck 2, and Chief 2-1 arrived to find active fire in the chimney. Rescue crew went interior with the Engine crew and removed damper to access chimney while the Truck crew raised a 14' roof ladder and the aerial ladder to access the roof. Truck  crew assisted by Engine 8 members dropped chains a total of 4 times to clear the chimney. Rescue and Engine crew used 1 dry chem extinguisher to extinguish fire within the chimney above the damper.

Dellville Road MVA

10/28 @0854 Rescue 2 dispatched to 600blk of Dellville Road for a vehicle into a house with reported entrapment. Rescue 2 and Chief 2-2 (Conrad) arrived to find a single vehicle into a house with no entrapment. Rescue crew assisted EMS with removing the patient from the vehicle, and controlled hazards.

Middle Paxton Twp. Job

10/12 @1401 Tanker 2 & Squad 2 dispatched to Dauphin County in Middle Paxton Township to assist at the scene of a house fire. On arrival, Tanker 2 was assigned to stretch a 50' section of 3" hose line to Engine 38 (Dauphin-Middle Paxton). The Tanker crew then went interior to assist with overhaul and the extinguishment of hot spots. Engine 2 was returned prior to arrival.

Rts 11&15 Extrication

10/5 @0419 Squad 2 dispatched to the ramp from  S Rts. 11&15 to E Rts. 22&322 for an accident with injuries.  Chief 2 (Worner) arrived to find an overturned tractor trailer with one occupant confined inside.  Squad 2 crew accessed the roof of the cab with a 14' roof ladder and removed driver from upright side of truck.  A flathead axe, windshield saw and hydraulic cutters were used to remove the windshield making access to remove occupant @0440.  Crew assisted EMS with patient packaging.

No hazards were detected.

Rts 22&322 MVA

10/4 @1127 while returning from a previous incident Squad 2 was alerted to Rts. 22&322 westbound at the entrance to Sheetz for an auto accident.  Squad arrived to find a two vehicle collision with drivers still in both vehicles.  Crew provided medical care as well as controlling hazards and traffic.

Rt. 274 Rollover

9/15 @1030 Squad 2 was dispatched to Rt. 274 in the area of Linton Hill Rd. for a vehicle accident with rollover, and wires down involving a tractor trailer. Squad 2 and Chief 2-3 (Weaver) arrived to find a tractor trailer had rolled off of the road way into a field, and snapped a support wire for a electric pole causing wires to go into the trees and cause a small fire in 4 trees. Squad crew evaluated the driver whom had no injuries and awaited arrival of PP&L while fire police controlled traffic.

Ten years ago the course of the American Fire Service History was changed forever. The single greatest loss of firefighters occurred that fateful morning. We will always remember the ultimate sacrifice that our FDNY brothers made, and all of those affected by the aftermath. May we never forget and may our Brothers rest easy.

 

 

Flood 2011

9/8 The Borough of Duncannon declared a State of Emergency and began preparations for extensive flooding at 0730. With the pending flood waters residents of Market St. were recommended to evacuate their homes. Throughout the day both stations maintained staffing to provide service to the residents of our effected areas. During the day crews assisted with several public service incidents and also a water rescue in Reed Twp.

A curfew has been imposed on the Borough of Duncannon from 2000 to 0600. Everyone should remain indoors due to numerous hazards due to the flooding. Throughout the night members of the Civil Air Patrol, Duncannon Fire Company along with the Penn Township Police will be patrolling the Borough. Residents are reminded to stay out of the flood water and not to drive through the water.

Any non emergency incidents should be phoned into the Duncannon Fire Station 834-3234 or the Duncannon Borough Office at 834-4311. Updates will be posted throughout the coming days as they become available.

UPDATE: 9/9 0630: The Susquehanna River has receded slightly but is expected to rise another 1.4 feet before cresting sometime this evening. River levels can be checked throughout the day at NOAA's Advanced Hydraulic Prediction Services.

Residents can also check out the FEMA Flood website for more information and tips for what to do after flood waters recede.

UPDATE: 9/10 1830: Water on Market St. has subsided but is still closed to allow residents time to move back into their homes safely.

Any resident in need of drinking water or food can come to the firehouse or the Borough building for bottled water and MREs.

Any resident that needs to have water removed from their basement should call the firehouse and have their name added to the pumping list.

 

 

1400 State RD

9/6 @1016 Squad 2 and Engine 6 (Marysville) were alerted to 1400 block of State Rd in the Village of Cove for an auto accident.  Units arrived to find a two vehicle collision with one being on its side off the road.  All occupants were self extricated before FD arrival.  Crews assisted with patient care, removed debris from road and provided traffic control.

Rts 11&15 mva

9/3 @0310 Lieutenant Buffington, on his way to work, came across an auto accident on Rts 11&15 at the Penn Twp./ Marysville Borough line.  LT. called Perry County and advised of such.  Squad 2 was dispatched some 6 minutes later as the dispatcher could not manually load an address into CAD.  Once on scene crews assisted in patient care, controlled leaking fluids and Fire Police controlled traffic.

Creek Rd mva

8/27  DFC was dispatched to the 200 block of Creek RD for an auto accident.  Chief 2 (Worner) arrived to find a single vehicle over the embankment with all occupants self extricated.  Penn Twp. PD did not need any FD services. 

Rt 849 Pin

8/22 @2156 Company 2 was dispatched to Rt. 849 at Butchershop Rd. for an accident with entrapment.  Chief 2 (Worner) arrived to find a head on collision with both occupants in the vehicles, one being fatally injured and one pinned.  Squad and Truck 2 crew stabilized the vehicle, stretched front bumper line, Provided basic life support, removed drivers side door and spread crushed rocker panel with hydraulic rescue tools to extricate victim @2213.  Squad crew also applied absorbent to leaking fluids.  Fire Police controlled traffic.

Truck 2 cleared @2228.  Other units remained to assist Penn Twp. PD with scene reconstruction.  Cleared @0038.

Market & Cumberland Sts.

8/22 @1712 Squad 2 was alerted to Duncannon Square for an accident with injuries.  Squad crew provided first aid and controlled hazards.  Fire Police controlled traffic.

Rts 22&322

8/18 @1201 Squad 2 alerted for an auto accident at the entrance to the Clarks Ferry Truck Stop.  A rear end collision between a van and a tractor trailer was found on arrival.  All occupants were out of the vehicles.  Truck driver extinguished an engine compartment fire on the van.  Squad crew controlled traffic with the apparatus,  removed the battery cable and removed debris from road.  Cleared @1232.

8/17  Members were trained on class B foam operations.

Fatal MVA

7/20 @2129 Squad 2 was alerted to the train crossing on Linton Hill Rd. for an accident involving a vehicle and a train.  Squad 2 arrived to find a severely damaged van, that had been struck by a train, over the embankment with the occupant ejected resulting in a fatality.  Squad crew provided lighting, controlled leaking fluids and assisted Coroner with body removal.  Cleared @0002.
